Er ist als eine der schönsten Mittelgebirgslandschaften Deutschlands bekannt. Zahlreiche Naturschutzgebiete belegen den hohen Naturschutzwert dieser Landschaft. In 2018 erreichte der Naturpark Saar-Hunsrück im Rahmen der von der Heinz-Sielmann-Stiftung durchgeführten öffentlichen Abstimmung zu Deutschlands Naturwunder 2018 einen sehr beachtlichen zweiten Platz.&lt;br /&gt;<br /> Im saarländischen Teilgebiet des Naturparks ist die Saarschleife bei Mettlach im Durchbruchtal der Saar durch den Taunusquarzit des Hunsrücks das Wahrzeichen des Saarlandes. Dieses Engtal wird von bis zu 200 m hohen Steilhängen und Steinrauschen gesäumt, da sich die Saar tief in das Gestein hinein geschnitten hat. Die Steilhänge mit ihren teils trockenen, offenen Fels- und Geröllfluren wechseln ab mit naturnahen Waldlebensräumen. In diesem Natura 2000-Schutzgebiet von europäischen Rang finden viele seltene Tier- und Pflanzenarten (z.T.
